Psyche - THE 11TH HOUR - 2005

Psyche returns into the darkness...

Psyche is back with their first original new release on Metropolis (USA). This CD is a must for anyone who likes Dark, Electro, music that you can actually hear the lyrics. Not noise polution like so many of the industrial bands out there. Psyche has covered it all since way back in 1982 or so. Darrin Huss has an amazing voice that keeps changing with the new directions on this CD. 15 Minutes is the strongest track to be considered for a single. I think a great club mix for this one will come out. I hope so as this is one great track. Some amazing soundscapes can be heard throughout this CD. I just love it. Psyche has always made great music that would fit into any Horror or Sci-Fi flick.
This CD is no exception. Order it right away. Great price too!

Psyche stands out.

Psyche does something really interesting here by beginning the album with a fusion of cooled down grooves of ambient chillout (a la Amethystium or Delerium) and organic sounds like the piano and tempered gothtronica. After these first two tracks ("Bloodcurse" and "Yearning"), the pace ups the ante and stronger dance oriented beats kick in, laced with just a trace of goa, but tempered by the warmer, if still dark, flavors of shadowy synthpop on "Defenseless". From there it's a dynamo ride through pieces like "September Moon" and "Justice and Damnation." I love how the track titles' poetry go hand in hand with the musical poetry waiting to encompass your soul. The dynamics of this album are what make it stand out from a lot of the sounds-like-every-other-album flooding the electro-industrial marketplace.
Metropolis Records is certainly getting this month off to a good start.

A challenging album, in a good way.

It took me a few listens, but I have grown quite fond of this album and cannot seem to get it out of my CD player. I have never heard anything else of Psyche's so I cannot compare this to anything else they have done in their long career.

Haunting melodies with sorrowfull and droning vocals. There is alot of passion in the mix here. You can feel everything Darrin is singing about. Musically I could compare this to alot of different synth bands, but the sound is pretty unique. Echoing drums reminescent of Lycia, drawn out synth lines and deep overtones with a sprinkling of piano and either synthesized or very amplified guitar. My only complaint is that a few songs lack variation and seem to drone in the same direction without hooks or buildup of any sort. Some very excellent tracks here though, My favorites have to be Until, and Theme 7/Assassin Reprise.

No matter what they say...

Psyche - BABYLON DELUXE - 2003

5 out of 5 starsPioneers return to form!, February 23, 2004

Psyche originally started in Canada before there was an alternative electronic scene.
Now, since Darrin relocated to Germany, and a line up change in 2000, we find them continuing to create more of the brilliant work they've been expected to do. Talented music meister Remi Szyszka is really getting into his own groove here as he's also taken over the production duties on Psyche's tenth album, "Babylon Deluxe".
Psyche's mission for full driving synth beats is accomplished here.

Opener "The Quickening", which is the lead single, is a straight-forward pop song much like "Gods and Monsters". "X-Rated" features guest vocalist Ms Poly-Ester in what is a blended vintage retro electropop track with reminders of Trans-X and The Normal making a danceable track. Coming of age "Edge of 17", bumps and grinds across with harsher pop beats but works nicely as Darrin's sharp vocals take over. "Nobody Superstar" brings on stark electro rhythms as the experimental "Snow Garden" includes more structure. "Sacrament" is one of the slower tracks along with "Equinoxe" and "Stormtrooper". These will equally send shivers down your spine with the elegance of their despair. Whereas the blooming technopop track "Final Destination" shows us the polish on Darrin's Doc Martens. "Babylon Deluxe" winds to a close with the instrumental "Nightwalk Theme" peaking with hints of the Donna Summer disco era, and other assorted historic synthesizer greats.

    Hello Darrin
I just want to thank you for a really great concert at Electropolis. It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. Hopefully it will not take another 2,5 years before you visit Sweden again. I can promise you that next time you are coming here neither me nor my friends will miss it. It was truly worth all the trouble we went through (i.e. spending 5 hours at the bus station, waiting for the bus to take us home).
See you next time you're in Sweden!!!

    From a huge fan,  Linda

Thanks for a great gig in Gothenburg!  Really looking forward to the new album - the new tracks sure sound good to me. Also, thank you for taking the time to sign the record for my girl. Be sure we'll catch you both next time :)  - Ciao!   from Lech

Euer super Poster mit original Unterschriften hat schon einen Platz in meiner Wohnung reserviert bekommen. Ich freue mich schon riesig auf Eure neue CD, die ja dann wohl hoffentlich bald erscheinen wird.
