DARK ENTRIES - Belgium - Interview with Darrin Huss from Psyche, 1996

1. Psyche has survived the eighties with its electronic music. How do you see Psyche in the nineties?

I think now it's harder to release new music and be noticed, but I'm still always hopeful that Psyche will continue to develop as we have, and receive respect for our individual style in any time period as long as we maintain an interested audience.

2. In fact, do you see yourself as a part of an electronic scene?

We are most definitely an electronic group, but I'm not sure what "scene" we may be a part of. There are so many posibilities with synthesizers and with Psyche we've always tried to show that in our songs. We do not decide if it's dark wave, techno or whatever.

3. Is there any band or person with whom you really would like to make music with? (Perhaps Marc Almond?)

I am very interested in some of the new electronic groups such as Apoptygma Berzerk, Haujobb and a few others. On the new Psyche album, perhaps there will be guest musicians from such groups. When I think of all that Marc Almond and Soft Cell have created, I am still in awe of this work, but I can't imagine what we could possibly create together.

4. Can you tell us something about your project INSIDE? What's the reaction of the press concerning INSIDE?

Inside is a new formation from the ex-"Eternal Afflict" musicians, and I to allow me the freedom to make other experiments in electronic music. Perhaps slightly on a more theatrical side. It's also a chance to sing with an experienced female vocalist, which is new and interesting for me. The reaction of the press has been fantastic. I feel that the audience has taken Inside seriously as a new but very definite group of its own.

5. What was the most exciting moment or period in your musical career so far?

The biggest thrill for us was the first record deal with New Rose in France in 1985. Afterwards, I would say the touring with Anne Clark in 1991. Other highpoints were the concerts we gave outside of Germany last year (e.g. in Poland and Belgium), because the audience was so excited.

6. At the moment, what's going on in your "psyche"? (What is important to write about in your current lyrics?)

I still continue to write personal songs of my life, and stories of other relations. My themes rely on how people develop or mutate! with time. Insecurities, perversions and romance are my main inspiration.
